Additional speed cameras to be installed along I-83 in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD—The Baltimore City Department of Transportation (BCDOT) announced Thursday an expansion of automated speed enforcement along the Jones Falls Expressway (JFX) / I-83 within city limits, aiming to reduce vehicular accidents and enhance safety. Two new speed cameras are set to go live on August 4, 2025, bringing the total number of operational cameras on the corridor to four.

BCDOT Director Veronica P. McBeth stated the expansion follows the passage of Chapter 567 of the 2025 Maryland General Assembly, which granted Baltimore City the authority to install up to four speed cameras on the JFX. Under the new authority, only one camera may operate in either direction at any given time.

Currently, speed cameras are located on the northbound JFX at Smith Avenue and southbound JFX at West North Avenue. The two additional cameras will be reinstalled near 41st Street to further improve speed compliance.

“With these new camera locations along the Jones Falls Expressway, BCDOT hopes to expand and solidify the meaningful reductions in crashes observed in the vicinity of the existing speed cameras,” McBeth said in a statement. “Our commitment to public safety is paramount, and these cameras serve as a constant reminder for drivers to obey posted speed limits, ultimately making the expressway safer for everyone.”

Motorists exceeding the posted speed limit by 12 miles per hour or more will receive a $40 citation by mail. These are considered civil violations, and no license points are assessed. Automated speed enforcement on the JFX operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Warning signs are posted along the JFX to alert drivers to the automated enforcement, and digital speed sentry signs provide real-time feedback on vehicle speeds. According to Maryland state law, revenue generated from the speed cameras will first cover the operating costs of the JFX camera system, with any remaining funds allocated for expressway improvements.
