Routine change leads to $50,000 lottery win for Essex woman

ESSEX, MD—A Baltimore County woman’s decision to alter her usual lottery routine paid off with a $50,000 top prize in the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5 drawing. The win, which occurred on July 3, was claimed by the winner, who chose to be identified as “Lucky Lynne,” on July 14 at Lottery headquarters.

Typically, the Essex resident purchases three combinations for $2 each night for the Bonus Match 5 drawing. However, on July 3, she opted to buy nine combinations for $6, a change that proved fortuitous.

“It wasn’t a lucky feeling or anything like that,” Lucky Lynne said. “It was just wanting to break out of a rut, to do something differently.”

The idea to change her purchase came to her as she approached the lottery vending machine at Wing’s Sports Bar, located at 8406 Washington Boulevard in Jessup. She stuck with the Bonus Match 5 game and used the quick-pick option for her combinations, but the additional six lines led to her $50,000 win.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” she recounted. “It was crazy, I was in shock. And then I realized that it was one of those extra lines that had won for me.”

She discovered her win the following day, the Fourth of July.

“We sure did celebrate in my house, the holiday and the $50,000. It was one heck of a weekend,” she added.
