BEL AIR, MD—The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) is set to open the first reconfigured ramp at the Interstate 95 and Maryland Route 24 (Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway) interchange by the end of Summer 2025, a key step in its $1.1 billion initiative to ease congestion and improve travel along the I-95 corridor into Harford County.
The reconstruction of the MD 24 interchange is designed to accommodate future northbound I-95 Express Toll Lanes (ETL). This reconfiguration necessitates significant changes to existing traffic patterns, including the removal, relocation, and addition of ramps, which will alter how drivers access I-95, MD 24, and MD 924.
The upcoming ramp opening will transfer vehicles traveling on southbound I-95 to MD 924 onto a new off-ramp. The MDTA stated this new ramp will follow a similar alignment to the current off-ramp.
Drivers should anticipate some traffic impacts as crews work to finalize the transition from the existing ramp to the new one. The MDTA plans to provide advance notification of these changes through traffic alerts posted on its website and via social media channels.
Construction for the overall project has commenced and is anticipated to conclude by fall 2027. During peak-traffic periods, all I-95 travel lanes and MD 24 traffic operations will be maintained. However, some travel lanes will be closed during off-peak hours. The MDTA urges drivers to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits within the construction zone. Motorists are also encouraged to sign up for email alerts to receive traffic advisories and notices.
