Gas Prices continue downward trend nationally for second consecutive week

BALTIMORE, MD—The average price of gasoline in the United States has dropped for the second straight week, falling 5.3 cents to $3.09 per gallon, GasBuddy reported Monday. The decline marks the lowest national average for Independence Day since 2020.

The national average is also down 1.1 cents from a month ago and is 37.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. Diesel prices also saw a decrease, falling 3.2 cents in the last week to $3.644 per gallon.

“Nearly every state saw average gas prices decline for the second straight week,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. He noted that the downward momentum could continue following OPEC’s decision to boost production by 548,000 barrels per day in August, which could further pressure oil prices.

De Haan suggested that if geopolitical tensions remain contained and major hurricanes avoid the Gulf Coast, the national average could dip below $3 per gallon later this summer, potentially reaching its lowest summer level since the pandemic.

Oil prices remained largely steady despite OPEC’s increased output. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was trading at $67.02 per barrel early Monday, up slightly from $65.44 last Monday. Brent crude was up 46 cents to $68.76 per barrel, compared to $67.74 a week ago.

U.S. oil inventories increased by 3.8 million barrels in the week ending June 27, 2025, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Gasoline inventories rose by 4.2 million barrels, while distillate inventories fell by 1.7 million barrels. Refinery utilization increased to 94.9%.

The most common gas price encountered by motorists nationwide remained $2.99 per gallon. The median U.S. gas price was also $2.99 per gallon.

Oklahoma ($2.63), Texas ($2.65), and Mississippi ($2.66) had the lowest average gas prices. California ($4.50), Hawaii ($4.48), and Washington ($4.34) reported the highest averages.

States experiencing the biggest weekly declines in gas prices included Indiana (-12.0 cents), Ohio (-11.7 cents), and Michigan (-10.8 cents).

For diesel, the most common price was $3.49 per gallon, down 20 cents from the previous week. Texas ($3.14), Mississippi ($3.24), and Louisiana ($3.24) had the lowest average diesel prices, while Hawaii ($5.26), California ($5.09), and Washington ($4.91) had the highest.
