Cyber Maryland transitions to Maryland Department of Labor, scaling workforce innovation for AI era

BALTIMORE, MD—Cyber Maryland, the state’s initiative for workforce development in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), information technology and related fields, has officially transitioned to the Maryland Department of Labor. The move, effective Tuesday, July 1, 2025, marks a new phase for the program after its incubation at the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO).

The transition underscores Maryland’s commitment to cultivating a skilled workforce capable of adapting to the rapid advancements in technology, particularly in the AI era. Governor Wes Moore has identified cyber as a “lighthouse sector,” crucial for Maryland’s economic growth.

To support this priority, the state is investing $3 million in Cyber Maryland. The funding aims to expand career pathways in cyber and related fields and ensure Maryland employers have access to the skilled workforce they need.

“Cybersecurity and technology are central to Maryland’s critical infrastructure and growth sectors — from health care to banking, and biotechnology to clean energy,” said Maryland Secretary of Labor Portia Wu. “We must make sure Maryland has a skilled and agile workforce trained in the latest tools.”

Seeyew Mo, who leads Cyber Maryland, highlighted the program’s adaptability. “At a time when AI is changing how every industry works, we are building a system that helps workers get experience and grow into cyber roles across many fields, including beyond tech,” Mo said.

Cyber Maryland plans to invest in high-impact initiatives such as cyber and AI clinics, which will provide cyber services to small businesses and community organizations. The program will also support industry-informed K-12 and postsecondary educational programs and strengthen partnerships between employers, educational institutions, and training providers. These collaborations are designed to equip workers with the skills necessary to meet current and future employer demands.
