WASHINGTON, DC—As millions of Americans prepare to travel for the Independence Day holiday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging all drivers to slow down and will launch a new anti-speeding campaign on Monday, July 7th.
The “Speeding Catches Up With You” campaign aims to address the deadly risks associated with excessive speed. Speeding contributed to nearly one-third of all traffic deaths annually, with new data revealing 11,775 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in 2023, and an estimated 332,598 injured.
The campaign, running through the end of July, will feature a new television advertisement highlighting the deadly consequences of speeding. Additionally, law enforcement agencies nationwide will conduct high-visibility enforcement efforts to deter speeders and prevent crashes.
“Speeding puts everyone at risk, and the consequences can be deadly,” said Peter Simshauser, NHTSA Chief Counsel. “NHTSA’s latest campaign aims to educate the public about the dangers of speeding, promote strong traffic safety laws, and support law enforcement on our nation’s roads.”
NHTSA emphasizes that while the Fourth of July holiday period is often associated with impaired driving, speeding also poses a significant threat. Drivers are reminded to observe posted speed limits, adjust for road conditions, and prioritize safety to ensure a joyful holiday weekend for all.
