DETROIT, MI—Honda Motor Co. is recalling more than 259,000 vehicles in the United States due to a faulty brake pedal that could increase the risk of a crash or injury, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this week.
The recall addresses a poorly secured pin in the brake pedal assembly, which can cause the pedal to shift out of position and prevent drivers from effectively using the brake.
Affected vehicles include certain 2023-2025 Honda Pilot models, 2023-2025 Acura MDX, and 2021-2025 Acura TLX vehicles. Honda estimates that approximately 1% of the 259,033 vehicles included in the recall likely have the defect.
The automaker has reported three warranty claims related to the issue but no injuries or deaths linked to the defect so far.
Owners of the recalled vehicles are advised to bring their cars to a Honda dealership, where the brake pedal assembly will be inspected and repaired free of charge if necessary. Notification letters to impacted owners are expected to be mailed by July 28.
Honda stated the brake pin issue originated during production at a U.S. plant, which has since closed and relocated to Mexico. The new facility has implemented a camera sensor system to verify that the pin is securely staked during manufacturing.
The company began an investigation in April 2024 after receiving a report of brake pedal movement in a vehicle. Honda determined the defect existed across certain vehicles on June 5, prompting the decision to issue the recall.
