PARKVILLE, MD—A routine trip for fruit turned into a million-dollar windfall for a Baltimore man after a last-minute decision to buy a Powerball ticket at a Parkville-area grocery store.
The man, who has not been publicly identified, initially walked past the Maryland Lottery kiosk at the Safeway on Waltham Woods Road on June 2 after completing his shopping. According to a press release from the Maryland Lottery, he changed his mind after overhearing a conversation about the Powerball jackpot. He turned back and purchased two Powerball tickets, along with several other lottery tickets.
A few days later, a friend mentioned that a $1 million winning ticket had been sold at that very same Safeway. The man rushed home to check his tickets and discovered he had matched all five of the white balls from the June 1 drawing. The winning numbers were 28, 38, 52, 54, and 68.
“Once he realized he was a $1 million winner, he called his mother to share the news,” the Maryland Lottery stated in the release. The winner, described as someone who enjoys exercising and playing basketball in his free time, had purchased the ticket that secured the second-tier prize.
This marks the second $1 million Powerball prize won in Maryland in a week. On June 11, a Baltimore County grandfather claimed a $1 million prize from a ticket sold in Catonsville for the June 4 drawing.
