BALTIMORE, MD—Two separate $1 million lottery prizes were collected in Maryland this month.
Baltimore County
A Baltimore County grandfather claimed a $1 million Powerball prize after matching five white balls in the June 4 drawing, the Maryland Lottery announced. The laid-back winner, who had predicted his win to his daughter earlier that day, narrowly missed the Powerball number for the jackpot.
The retiree purchased two Powerball Quick Pick tickets last week at the Soda Pop Shop, located at 1026 Ingleside Avenue in Catonsville, while out with his daughter. Upon returning to the car, he reportedly told her, “One of these is a winner.”
The next morning, he scanned his tickets and discovered the seven-figure win. “The screen lit up, but I couldn’t read what it said,” he recounted. “But, I could see a bunch of zeroes.” After adjusting the lighting, he confirmed the $1 million prize and immediately called his children.
His daughter, who accompanied him to claim the prize on June 11, initially misinterpreted his casual remark, “I feel like a million bucks.” She later noted his calm demeanor. “I called him back and he was so nonchalant about it,” she said. “You would think he only won a dollar.”
The winner stated he plans to share a portion of his winnings with his children. “With the rest, I’ll spend some and maybe save some,” he added with a smile during his visit to Lottery headquarters.
Prince George’s County
A New York City resident has claimed a $1 million prize from the Maryland Lottery after purchasing a scratch-off ticket while visiting a friend in Prince George’s County. The winning ticket, a $20 Millionaire’s Club instant game, was the last of five top prizes available in the game, which launched in July 2024.
The man, who plays lottery games regularly in various states, described playing scratch-offs as “just a fun thing to do,” he said after claiming his windfall on June 12. He expressed happiness over the win, noting it significantly surpasses his previous largest lottery prize of less than $500.
When asked about his plans for the money, the new millionaire simply stated, “Invest!”
The lucky ticket was sold at the Discount Tobacco and 99 Cent Store, located at 6701 Suitland Road in Morningside.
