ANNAPOLIS, MD—Maryland Governor Wes Moore this week announced the launch of a $19 million Customer Relief Fund aimed at assisting limited- and middle-income energy ratepayers across the state amid rising nationwide energy costs.

The funds, donated by utility parent company Exelon, will be distributed through local nonprofit partners in the service areas of BGE, Pepco, and Delmarva Power.

“Not a day goes by without me hearing from Marylanders about their real and justified concerns over steep bill increases,” Moore said, standing with utility providers and nonprofit representatives. “We need to work together to get them relief — and today, we are taking new actions to achieve exactly that.”

The Customer Relief Fund is designed as a temporary, one-time assistance program. The United Way of Central Maryland will administer $15 million for BGE customers. The Salvation Army will handle $2.5 million for Pepco customers, while the Harford Community Action Agency, the Salvation Army, and Shore UP! will administer $1.5 million for Delmarva Power customers.

Approved grants will range between $250 and $750 for BGE ratepayers and up to $300 for Pepco and Delmarva Power ratepayers.

Exelon President and CEO Calvin Butler stated that high energy bills are “extremely stressful for low- and middle-income customers.”

“The Customer Relief Fund, in addition to our existing year-round programs supporting customers with energy assistance, once again demonstrates Exelon’s commitment to our communities,” Butler said.

BGE President and CEO Tamla Olivier echoed the sentiment, saying the fund “reflects our deep commitment to supporting the communities we serve.” Franklyn Baker, President and CEO of United Way of Central Maryland, highlighted the immediate impact, noting the aid would “help keep the power on for our neighbors in need.”

Pepco Holdings CEO Tyler Anthony emphasized the company’s “deep community roots,” while Major Wilma Mason, National Capital Area Commander for The Salvation Army, said the fund “will go a long way toward fulfilling this vision today.”

Eligibility and disbursement details will vary by utility company and its partner nonprofit. Ratepayers are encouraged to visit their local energy company’s website for more information on how to apply for support.
