Maryland school employee wins $870,000 lottery jackpot

BALTIMORE, MD—A Hagerstown woman has claimed an $870,000 Multi-Match jackpot, a secret she’s kept since her winning ticket matched all six numbers on April 10. The winner, who chose the $510,000 cash option, shared her story at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

The lucky player, who wished to remain anonymous, said she only plays the lottery “when I’m in a store that sells tickets and I have few spare dollars in my pocket.” Her winning moment came after grocery shopping at Martins on Wesel Road in Hagerstown, where she used $4 in change to purchase tickets.

She learned of her win through a news app notification.

“It said that Martins had sold a jackpot winner. It reminded me that I’d bought a ticket there,” she explained.

A quick check on the Maryland Lottery app confirmed her life-changing win.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” she recounted. “All this time later, it still hasn’t really registered. My mind has been going at full speed for two months now.”

Immediately after discovering her win, she texted a family member, who accompanied her to claim the prize. The relative noted it was the most exclamation points he had ever seen in a text message.

The Hagerstown resident plans to invest her winnings, potentially including the purchase of a new house. She also intends to continue playing the lottery, especially at the Martins location where she bought her winning ticket.
