BALTIMORE, MD—Your car says a lot about who you are, but in America, it’s not just about the make and model – it’s about what’s hanging on the back bumper. Custom license plates have become the ultimate way for drivers to show off their personality, crack a joke, or make a statement that follows them down every highway.
Some states are absolutely obsessed with personalized plates. Others? Not so much. Online Free Games wanted to find out where custom plate fever runs hottest, so they crunched the numbers on search interest and design options across all 50 states.
The gaming platform analyzed Google searches for custom plates throughout 2023, looking at terms like “personalized license plate” for each state. They also tracked how many different designs each state offers its residents. By combining search volume per 10,000 vehicles (60% of the score) with design variety (40%), they created a ranking that reveals America’s most plate-crazy states.

Maine Takes The Crown With Sky-High Search Interest
Maine absolutely dominates when it comes to custom plate enthusiasm, with residents searching for personalized plates at nearly 98 searches per 10,000 vehicles monthly. That’s more than any other state by a massive margin. While Maine only offers 49 different designs, Mainers are clearly hungry for plate personalization – they’re just working with what they’ve got.
Maryland Wins on Variety, Loses on Buzz
Maryland lands in second place thanks to an incredible 989 different design options – by far the most in the nation. But here’s the twist: Marylanders aren’t actually searching for custom plates that much, with only 6.68 searches per 10,000 vehicles. It’s like having the world’s biggest candy store that nobody knows about.
Texas Brings Both Size and Interest
Everything’s bigger in Texas, and that includes custom plate enthusiasm. The Lone Star State offers 476 different designs and sees solid search interest at 29.99 searches per 10,000 vehicles. Texas proves that when you’ve got options and a culture that loves self-expression, people will bite.
The data reveals some fascinating regional patterns. Smaller, rural states like Maine and Alaska show intense search interest but limited design options, suggesting pent-up demand. Meanwhile, East Coast states like Maryland and Pennsylvania have invested heavily in design variety – Maryland’s nearly 1,000 options dwarf most other states.
What’s surprising? Some of America’s biggest states didn’t crack the top 10. California, Florida, and New York – states known for flashy car culture – apparently aren’t as obsessed with custom plates as you’d expect.
“License plates might seem like a small detail, but they can actually be a non-traditional window into American culture,” said Serge Eliseeff, CEO of Online Free Games. “Just like how people customize their gaming avatars or social media profiles, personalizing your license plate is another way Americans express their individuality.
“What’s interesting is seeing how different states approach this – some offer tons of creative options while others have residents practically begging for more choices,” Eliseeff added. “It really shows how important personal expression is to Americans, even in the most everyday aspects of life.”
