BALTIMORE, MD—Interest in fully electric vehicles (EVs) among American drivers has dropped to its lowest point since 2019, with only 16% of U.S. adults saying they are “very likely” or “likely” to purchase an EV as their next vehicle, according to a new survey from AAA released Tuesday.
The survey, conducted in April 2025, marks a significant decline from 2022, when 23% of respondents expressed enthusiasm for buying an EV. Despite the introduction of more than 75 EV models in the past four years, consumer hesitancy has grown, driven by concerns over high costs, limited driving range, and insufficient charging infrastructure.
“Affordability remains a key barrier,” said Greg Brannon, AAA’s director of automotive research. “Many Americans are waiting for EVs to become more cost-competitive with traditional gas-powered vehicles.”
The survey found that 60% of respondents cited the high purchase price as a primary reason for reluctance, while 55% pointed to concerns about range anxiety and the availability of charging stations. Additionally, 48% expressed worries about the cost of battery replacement or maintenance.
Despite the decline in interest, the survey highlighted a growing openness to hybrid vehicles, with 31% of respondents saying they are likely to consider a hybrid as their next vehicle. Hybrids, which combine electric and gas power, are seen as a more practical option for many due to their lower cost and reduced reliance on charging infrastructure.
AAA’s findings come as the U.S. auto industry faces a pivotal moment, with automakers investing heavily in EV production while grappling with slower-than-expected adoption. The survey suggests that improving charging networks and offering more affordable EV options could help reverse the trend.
“Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, show slightly higher interest in EVs, but even they prioritize cost and convenience,” Brannon noted.
The survey, conducted online among 1,152 U.S. adults, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points. AAA encourages drivers to explore EV options through test drives and research to better understand their benefits and limitations.
