Maryland State Police step up patrols for Memorial Day weekend

BALTIMORE, MD—In anticipation of increased traffic and potential road hazards, the Maryland State Police announced increased patrols and enforcement efforts targeting distracted, aggressive, and impaired driving throughout the Memorial Day weekend. Troopers from all 23 barracks and the State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) Team will be deployed in saturation patrols and high-visibility enforcement initiatives statewide.

The initiative aims to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities by deterring distracted, aggressive, and impaired driving. Maryland State Troopers will enforce the law when motorists’ safety is at risk.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office is providing funding to support the increased enforcement efforts.

The enforcement will be concentrated in areas known for higher incidents of impaired driving crashes and along major highways and interstates across the state. The Eastern Region will focus on U.S. routes 301, 13, 50, and Maryland routes 404, 413. The Central Region will target interstates 495, 95, Maryland routes 185, 97, 124, and U.S. routes 29, 193. In the Western Region, enforcement will be concentrated along interstates 81 and 70, U.S. Route 40, and in areas known for a higher number of impaired driving crashes. The Hagerstown Barrack will also conduct a Move Over Initiative on Memorial Day. The Northern Region will focus on U.S. Route 40, while the Southern Region will target U.S. Route 50, Maryland routes 5, 235, 4, and interstates 295, 97, 695.

The Maryland State Police urge motorists to plan ahead for safe transportation if celebrating this Memorial Day weekend. Rideshare services, taxis, designated sober drivers, and public transportation are all available alternatives to driving under the influence of alcohol.
