ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Wes Moore on Tuesday officially signed into law $1.66 billion in new taxes and fees—the largest tax increase in Maryland history.
The Maryland Freedom Caucus says these sweeping tax hikes will hit every Marylander, with a hefty burden placed on those who drive.
“Hold onto your wallets and car keys,” said the Maryland Freedom Caucus. “Governor Moore’s war on drivers continues, with a barrage of new fees and taxes that punish working families for commuting to work, taking their kids to school, or running errands. This is government greed disguised as infrastructure.”
The Maryland Freedom Caucus warned during the legislative session that these tax increases were unnecessary, avoidable, and reckless , especially when Maryland families are already struggling with high inflation and rising energy costs.
A new internet tax, including data and IT services, is expected to generate almost $500 million per year in new taxes. Wade Berger, owner of Ascendant Innovations, estimates this new tax will increase his company’s tax burden by 624%.
“We should be cutting waste and reining in spending , not soaking the taxpayers for another billion-dollar binge,” the Caucus continued. “Maryland doesn’t have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem.”
The Maryland Freedom Caucus says it remains committed to fighting for fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, and real accountability in Annapolis.
