JARRETTSVILLE, MD—Fire investigators say two dogs died in a Harford County house fire that was caused by a lightning strike over the weekend.
The fire broke out at just before 6:15 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025 in the 2300-block of Schuster Road in Jarrettsville.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy fire throughout the house. Due to the home’s location, firefighters used numerous tankers to assist with extinguishing the fire. Although the home had fire sprinklers, investigators determined that fire had likely originated in the attic, where sprinklers are not located, and quickly spread throughout the residence.
The area experienced severe thunderstorms, and surrounding neighbors observed, heard, and felt a lightning strike. Investigators later confirmed the home was struck by lightning.
In coordination with the Harford County Department of Emergency Services, chief fire officers determined that heavy machinery would be used to assist in extinguishing the fire. The home and all contents are total loss. Damages have been estimated at $1.2 million.
No one was home at the time of the fire, however two family dogs perished in the blaze. It took firefighters about an hour to control the fire, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
