Towson University receives $1 million endowment to establish first endowed professorship in Nursing

TOWSON, MD—Towson University’s College of Health Professions has received a $1 million gift from Mildred H. Burkman (’82) and her husband, Dr. Ronald T. Burkman, to establish the Mildred H. Burkman ’82 Endowed Professorship in Nursing. This marks the first endowed professorship in the college.

The endowment commemorates Millie Burkman’s nursing career spanning community health, school health, and pediatrics. Burkman, a non-traditional student, returned to Towson University to pursue her BS in nursing through the RN to BS program.

“Improving the student experience and conducting needed research are the goals for our gift,” said Millie Burkman. “Endowed faculty positions help attract high-quality teachers and researchers, which improves the academic environment and attracts well-qualified students. Coupled with the recent opening of the state-of-the-art Health Professions Building, it seemed like a unique opportunity to make a difference.”

The Burkman Professorship will support a tenured, full-time nurse who excels in teaching, research, and community engagement. The title of the position will be Mildred H. Burkman ’82 Endowed Professor in Nursing. The endowment supports salaries, benefits, and non-salary teaching, scholarship, and outreach initiatives aligned with TU’s mission and values.

Lisa Plowfield, dean of the College of Health Professions, said that this extraordinary gift will strengthen the college’s ability to attract and retain top faculty shaping healthcare’s future. “We are honored by the Burkmans’ trust and investment in our college and university. Their gift will have a lasting impact by enabling faculty to expand their teaching and research in ways that directly benefit students, the nursing profession and the populations we serve.”
