Gas prices dip on trade optimism

BALTIMORE, MD—The national average price of gasoline has fallen 4.2 cents to $3.08 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. This decline, observed across 150,000 gas stations nationwide, marks an 8.6-cent decrease over the past month and a significant 50.6-cent drop compared to last year.

This trend is attributed to the conclusion of seasonal maintenance at refineries, leading to increased output, as explained by Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. However, De Haan cautions that recent trade developments between the U.S. and China could impact oil prices, potentially leading to slight gas price increases in the coming weeks.

Forty states experienced a week-over-week decrease in average gasoline prices, while only ten saw increases, mainly in Western states after another refinery fire in Northern California disrupted production.

Despite a surge in oil prices exceeding $4 per barrel, the national average gasoline price continues to decline. In contrast, diesel prices decreased by 2.7 cents in the last week, reaching $3.473 per gallon.
