Maryland celebrates National Bike Month with statewide events

BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Department of Transportation is celebrating National Bike Month throughout May with a series of events promoting bike safety, equitable access, and healthy lifestyles. The initiative encourages Marylanders of all ages to explore biking as a fun, healthy, and sustainable transportation option. The Department is inviting everyone to trade four wheels for two as part of the month-long celebration.

“For many riding a bike is an essential part of life to travel between home, transit stops, work and life’s opportunities,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. He emphasized the importance of sharing the road with cyclists and reminded drivers to be mindful of their safety.

MDOT’s Bike Month events kick off with Bike & Roll to School Day on May 7th, a national event encouraging safe routes to school.  Residents can see if their school is registered on the national walk, bike and roll to school website here. Following this, MDOT will host a webinar on May 8th focusing on Bike Month activities, commuter options, and travel tips.  Those interested in attending can register online here.

The main event, Bike to Work Week, takes place from May 12th to 18th, featuring group rides and pit stops statewide. Those interested can find local events on Bike to Work Central Maryland and Bike to Work DC.

These events align with MDOT’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and accessible transportation options for all Marylanders. The department recently implemented a Complete Streets policy, prioritizing the safety of cyclists and pedestrians in street planning and design.

The Bike Month celebrations also support MDOT’s Serious about Safety program, a department-wide initiative aimed at reducing accidents and saving lives.

MDOT encourages everyone to participate in Bike Month and share their cycling experiences on social media using #BikeMonth, #BikeRolltoSchoolDay, #BTWD2025, and #MDOTinMotion.
