BALTIMORE, MD—A northern Baltimore County man who was spending a leisurely afternoon at the Maryland Home and Garden Show in Timonium on March 8 now has enough cash for a few home improvement projects. He stopped by the Maryland Lottery’s booth at the show, decided to play Powerball, and won $50,004.
The Home and Garden Show is one of dozens of events that the Maryland Lottery attends throughout the year all over the state. At the Maryland Lottery’s booth, anyone 18 or older can take a free spin of the prize wheel to win various promotional items – and at select events, a Maryland Lottery retailer is on-site selling tickets.
The Baltimore County resident said he and his wife were in line to spin the wheel, but the line was long, so he while he waited he decided to step over to the area of the booth where J Convenience of Parkville was selling tickets.
While he said he usually waits for the jackpot to get higher, he decided to buy a Powerball ticket with the jackpot sitting at $320 million for the March 8 drawing. His $10 ticket had five lines of quick-picked numbers.
The next day, he checked his ticket and saw that one of the lines of numbers matched four of the first five balls that were drawn, as well as the Power Ball number, delivering a third-tier prize of $50,000. He also matched the Power Ball number on one of the other lines, giving him another $4.
The winning numbers for the March 8 drawing were: 2, 4, 16, 23 and 63; the Power Ball was 13.
The retired salesman said he will put his prize money in the bank. He added that going to the Home and Garden Show with his wife is an annual tradition. In addition to the $50,000, he also received a prize after spinning the Lottery wheel.
“We got a lanyard and a pen,” he said with a smile.
J Convenience, located at 8765 Satyr Hill Road in Parkville is no stranger to selling winning tickets, as the store recently sold a $3.3 million Multi-Match jackpot winner for the Feb. 24 drawing.
Meanwhile, the jackpots in both Powerball and Mega Millions are continuing to climb. Friday night’s Mega Millions jackpot is at an estimated annuity value of $277 million with the cash option of $129.5 million The estimated jackpot annuity for Saturday’s Powerball drawing is $378 million and the cash option is $177.5 million.
