BALTIMORE, MD—The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General on Monday released the identity of the man who was fatally shot by police in White Marsh on January 31st.
The decedent has been identified as 37-year-old Brian McCourry Jr., of Essex. McCourry died on March 3rd.
On January 31, at approximately 6:10 a.m., detectives with the Baltimore County Police Department were in the 10700-block of Pulaski Highway conducting surveillance on an SUV occupied by two people. Detectives were aware that the driver had multiple outstanding warrants.
Detectives attempted to perform a vehicle block to pin the SUV in order to apprehend the driver. Detectives then exited their vehicles and approached the SUV when the driver maneuvered out of the block, striking an unmarked police vehicle.
Detective J. Trenary discharged his firearm, striking the driver. The SUV continued traveling through a parking lot and struck an unrelated civilian vehicle before crashing. The SUV driver, an adult male, was struck in the upper body and suffered life-threatening injuries.
McCourry was taken to an area hospital, where he remained until succumbing to his injuries on March 3rd. No other individuals were injured.
Detectives assigned to the Baltimore County Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Support Team are not equipped with body-worn cameras, and the involved police vehicles are not equipped with dashboard cameras.
The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General began investigating this shooting on January 31. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
