Gas prices climb for fifth consecutive week

NOTTINGHAM, MD—For the fifth straight week, the nation’s average gas price has risen, climbing 2.9 cents from a week ago and stands at $3.34 per gallon on Monday according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. The national average is up 6.8 cents from a month ago and 92.8 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 4.1 cents in the last week and stands at $3.70 per gallon – again a fresh multi-year high.

“The price of oil pushed into territory unseen in over seven years as WTI crude hit $88 per barrel, which continues to drag gasoline prices higher. With continued concerns over geopolitical tensions and crude oil supply, the small yet noticeable increases are likely to continue,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “The only factor keeping gas prices from rising more substantially is that gasoline demand remains low as winter storms keep motorists closer to home. Once the weather starts to turn and warm gradually, we’ll lose the only restraint to larger price increases.”

The most common U.S. gas price encountered by motorists stood at $3.19 per gallon, unchanged from last week, followed by $3.09, $2.99, $3.29, and $3.15 rounding out the five most common prices. The average cost at the priciest 10% of stations stands at $4.38 per gallon, up 2 cents from a week ago, while the lowest 10% average $2.90 per gallon, up 5 cents from a week ago. The median U.S. price is $3.19 per gallon, unchanged from last week and about 15 cents lower than the national average. The states with the lowest average prices: Mississippi ($2.98), Arkansas ($2.99), and Texas ($2.99). The states with the highest prices: California ($4.62), Hawaii ($4.37), and Washington ($3.92).
