Formula 1 racing fan claims winning $50,000 Bonus Match 5 ticket sold in Nottingham, will use funds to see sport in person

NOTTINGHAM, MD—The man who bought a winning $50,000 Bonus Match 5 ticket in Nottingham has claimed his prize.

A Baltimore retiree has national and international travel on his mind after his big win.

A fan of Formula 1 racing, the retired teaching assistant and substitute teacher for Baltimore City Public Schools plans to pack his suitcases for race destinations — if COVID-19 restrictions allow. He wants to see his favorite sport in person, and is dreaming of a trip to Dubai next year to watch a race.

The father of two decided to try his luck during a recent grocery shopping trip to BJ’s Wholesale Club in Nottingham.  The 67-year-old bought two quick-pick tickets for the December 16 Bonus Match 5 drawing and went on his way.

The next morning, he stopped at a Shell gas station on Belair Road in keeping with his routine.

“I check tickets in the morning at the gas station,” he said. The loyal player couldn’t hide his happiness at seeing the $50,000 prize. “I celebrated with the people at the gas station and then I got out of there quickly!”

The grandfather of one has shared news of his good fortune with his family members and friends. Also celebrating its luck is BJ’s Wholesale Club. The store located at 4201 Wholesale Club Drive received a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling a top-prize-winning Bonus Match 5 ticket in the game.

In 2021, Maryland retailers have sold 41 Bonus Match 5 top-prize-winning tickets.
