BALTIMORE, MD—The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday released state jobs and unemployment data.
According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 500 jobs in August. Maryland’s unemployment rate remained at 3.8%. Maryland continues to be in its longest stretch of unemployment below 4% since 2008.
Last month, the Financial Activities sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 1,300 jobs. The Leisure and Hospitality sector increased by 1,000 jobs from the Accommodation and Food Services (800) and
Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation (200) sub-sectors. Other sectors that experienced growth include: Other Services (600); Mining, Logging, and Construction (400); Education and Health Services (400); and Information
(300).
Three sectors experienced a decline in August. The Professional and Business Services sector decreased by 4,600 jobs from the Administrative, Support, Waste Management, and Remediation Services (3,000), Professional,
Scientific, and Technical Services (1,500), and Management of Companies and Enterprises (100) subsectors. The Manufacturing sector declined by 800 jobs and the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector declined by 500 jobs.
July’s preliminary jobs estimate was revised upwards by 600 jobs, from a loss of 4,100 to a loss of 3,500 jobs.
