Nottingham man wins $30,000 with Md. Lottery scratch-off

MD LotteryEvery day, a 56 year-old contractor drives his wife to work. Some days, he purchases scratch-offs during his lunch break.

Last Thursday, the Nottingham resident combined the two — he purchased a scratch-off while driving his wife to work, which led to a $30,000 Ruby Riches win.

“It was going to be an unusual day anyway,” the father of three told Lottery officials. “The project I’m working on wasn’t going to allow for a lunch break, which is when I typically get my tickets. So I stopped for one that morning, right after I dropped off my wife.”

The lucky contractor has been playing Ruby Riches in recent weeks and has found several significant winners.

“I’ve been doing well with it so I get one whenever I see them,” he said.

When he revealed the big win Thursday morning, he didn’t believe it.

“I studied it for a moment — seeing but not really accepting the $30,000 win as true — and then turned the car around to get back to my wife.”

When he entered her office he was literally jumping, she reports.

The Baltimore County couple plan to share some of their winnings with family and save the rest. The Lottery’s Ruby Riches game was introduced last August and has three $30,000 top-prizes remaining. Eleven $1,000 winners also remain.

The small change to our winner’s daily schedule, the one that put him on a path to his $30,000 Ruby Riches win, took him straight through the 7-Eleven convenience store at 1921 Old Eastern Avenue in Baltimore. The lucky Lottery retailer will receive a $300 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
