Essex carjacking suspects arrested after crashing during police chase

Powell has been charged with armed carjacking, two counts of armed robbery, use of a firearm in a crime of violence, two counts of first-degree assault, and theft. He is currently being held at the Baltimore County Department of Corrections on denied bail status.

Marquis MitchellPolice in Baltimore County have arrested two men in connection with an armed carjacking in Essex.

At just before 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, officers responded to the 1200 block of Handsworth Place for an armed carjacking. Police learned that a man and woman had parked their car in front of their apartment complex on Handsworth Place (21221).

The victims said that two suspects, possibly a third suspect, came up to their car and threatened both of them with handguns. The suspects told the victims to get out of the car. The victims begged to be able to remove their infant son from the car. The suspects did allow the victims to remove their child and groceries, then stole the car and fled from the scene.

A responding officer saw the stolen car on MD Route 702 near Old Eastern Avenue. The officer was able to coordinate with the aviation unit to follow the stolen car.

The car struck another vehicle on the road in the area of Philadelphia Road and Golden Ring Road in Rosedale (21237). Shortly after the collision, the suspects jumped out of the stolen car and ran from police.

The officers were able to take both suspects into custody. One of the suspects injured himself while running from police. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. That suspect’s identity will be released once he has formally been charged.

The second suspect was identified as Marquis Shaquan Mitchell, 20, of Daybreak Terrace, 21206. Mitchell has been charged with carjacking, two counts of armed robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, two counts of first-degree assault, resisting arrest, and theft.

He is currently being held at the Baltimore County Department of Corrections on a denied bail status. Police did not find any evidence indicating that a third suspect may have been involved in this crime.

Rash of recent, local burglaries continues

Police LightsPolice continue to investigate a rash of burglaries that have been reported within the past week.  In addition to the burglaries listed here, police listed the burglaries below on Tuesday.

Sometime between 5 a.m. on May 5 and 8 a.m. on May 8, an individual entered Orbit Technologies’ construction site, located in the 5200 Block of King Avenue, 21237, and stole copper wire. The suspect then fled the scene.

Sometime between 1 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. on Monday, May 8, an individual made entry to a home on Cartwright Court, 21237, via a back door. Once inside, the suspect damaged and stole the victim’s property.

Sometime between 11:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday, an individual entered an apartment in the 1200 block of Handsworth Place, 21221, and stole household goods before fleeing the scene.

Sometime between 2 and 5 p.m. on Monday, a man entered an apartment on Oak Grove Drive, 21220, and stole three TVs and a game system.

At around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, an individual climbed through a window to a residence in the 7500 block of Belair Road, 21236, and stole cash from a lockbox located in a bedroom and then fled. The suspect was arrested.

Police investigating robbery, several burglaries

Sometime between 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, and 6:15 p.m. on Friday, March 24, someone broke into a storage container on the victim’s property, located in the 10800 block of Pfeffers Road, 21087, by cutting the lock. No property was taken.

Sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, an an individual entered a home in the 5300 block of Abbeywood Court, 21237, via a sliding glass door. Once inside, the suspect stole personal items before fleeing the scene.

At about 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 24, after returning to their vehicle in the 1700 block of Chesaco Avenue, 21237, two victims were assaulted by an unknown armed suspect. The suspect stole cash from one of the victims and then fled.

Sometime between 8 p.m. on Friday, March 24 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, someone entered a residence in the 5600 block of Whitby Road, 21206, through the back door. The suspect stole clothing, two handguns, jewelry, a purse and two video games.

At about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, three suspects broke into the rear of Big Laundromat Lavanderia, located in the 400 block of Eastern Boulevard, 21221, by breaking a piece of plywood which was sealing the entrance. Nothing was taken and one juvenile suspect was apprehended.

Sometime between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, an individual forced in the front door of an apartment in the 1200 block of Handsworth Place, 21221. A television, a DVD player, a cell phone, and various shoes were stolen.

At just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, March 26, an individual gained entry into a home in the 5400 block of Balistan Road, 21237, via an unsecured kitchen window, which sounded the alarm. The inside appeared to be untouched and no damage was observed.
