Maryland adds 10,200 jobs in October

BALTIMORE, MD—The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday released state jobs and unemployment data.

According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 10,200 jobs and the unemployment rate increased to 7.8% in October. In the last six months, Maryland has gained a total of 206,300 jobs, with 220,900 jobs gained in the private sector.

The Leisure and Hospitality sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 9,100 jobs from the Accommodation and Food Services (8,600) and Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation (500) subsectors. The Education and Health Services sector increased by 4,100 jobs.

Other sectors that experienced growth include: Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (3,400); Professional and Business Services (2,200); Other Services (2,100); Financial Activities (300); Information (100); and Manufacturing (100).

The Mining, Logging, and Construction sector decreased by 2,600 jobs.

September’s preliminary jobs estimate was revised upwards by 1,200 jobs, from a gain of 18,200 jobs to a gain of 19,400 jobs.
