BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is closely monitoring and preparing for a weekend snow event that will affect most of the state.
Crews continue to pretreat state-maintained roads in many areas.
Some snow accumulation is expected, particularly in the western and northern parts of the state.
As the precipitation transitions from snow to sleet and freezing rain, driving conditions will be challenging and motorists are urged to make smart travel decisions.
Colder temperatures will linger into Saturday evening, so motorists are urged to remain extra vigilant if traveling.
Elevated road surfaces such as bridges, ramps and overpasses are first to freeze.
MDOT SHA utilizes technological tools to monitor the weather and respond effectively. The Mobile Advanced Road Weather Information Sensor (MARWIS) is fixed on more than 50 vehicles in the field. This technology collects pavement information such as type of precipitation, traction, air and pavement temperatures, and relative humidly. Using this data, storm managers to strategically deploy resources.
For motorists, “Take It Slow on Ice and Snow,” and remember that speed limits are set for ideal (dry) conditions.
